Emer Cooke Receives Nomination for Position of EMA Executive Director

Emer Cooke, currently the director of the Regulation and Prequalification Department at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, has been nominated by the European Medicines Agency’s (EMA’s) management board to be the new executive director of EMA.

Selected from a shortlist of candidates that had been created by the European Commission (EC), Cooke has been invited to present a statement to the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety (ENVI) on July 13, 2020. The appointment of the position of EMA executive director will only be made after the ENVI meeting.

Cooke has more than 30 years’ experience within international regulatory affairs, it was revealed in a June 25, 2020 press release discussing her nomination. Cooke has worked for the pharmaceutical unit of the EC from 1998 until 2002 and then at EMA between 2002 and 2016, where she was positioned as the head of inspections and head of international affairs, among other roles.
