Gerresheimer Presents Solutions for Sensitive Drugs at CPhI 2016

The Gx RTF ClearJect syringe is made of cyclic olefin copolymer and is tungsten- and adhesive-free.

Gerresheimer announced that it will be showcasing its Gx RTF ClearJect syringe made of cyclic olefin copolymer (COP) at CPhI 2016. The syringes, which are designed for sensitive drugs, are now being manufactured in Germany. The whole syringe, including the needle overmould, is produced in one single step, according to Gerresheimer.

With increasing demands placed on primary packaging manufactures, it is important to ensure that the drugs do not interact with the syringe material. COP offers an alternative to the traditional glass syringe.

Gx RTF ClearJect syringe

The Gx RTF ClearJect syringe is made of COP because the material does not leach metal ions into the drug solution. COP has a high pH tolerance, and unlike glass, there is no change in pH value over time during storage. COP’s inert and break-resistant properties offer a safety advantage for sensitive and toxic APIs. The Gx RTF ClearJect syringe is also tungsten- and adhesive-free.

High elasticity in comparison to similar materials also enhances the Dupont impact strength of COP syringes. The use of a high-viscosity silicon oil to coat the inside of the syringe barrel reduces the level of syringe content contamination with silicon particles, and the integration of standardized closure components also offers the pharmaceutical manufacturer flexibility. The Gx RTF ClearJect syringe comes with standard needles, plungers, plunger heads, backstops, and closures.

Two of Gerresheimer’s experts will also be giving presentations on multilayer tablet containers and the use of tungsten in syringe production.

Pharmaceutical drugs are often sensitive to moisture vapor and oxygen. As a result, they need more effective protection from suitable packaging. Gerresheimer has, therefore, extended its range of Duma-family products to include an additional model with improved barrier properties for enhanced air-tightness and more reliable content protection. Dr. Wolfgang Dirk, Product Management and Innovation at Gerresheimer, will be explaining the key aspects, potential pitfalls, and applications for multilayer containers and their closures.

The use of tungsten in the glass syringe moulding process on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, 10:30 to 10:55

Liquid dose pharmaceuticals can react to traces of tungsten that are left behind during the drilling part of the syringe manufacturing process. In this talk, Bernd Zeiss, biologist and technical support manager at Gerresheimer Medical Systems in Bünde, will explain the reasons for this interaction, including how low-tungsten and tungsten-free syringe can provide alternatives for sensitive applications.
