Issue 7

Editors' picks of pharmaceutical science & technology innovations; the latest in automation/IT/process control from Invensys Operations Management, Novatek International, Aspen Technology, and Accelrys.

Software manages complex batch processes

Invensys Operations Management has released a new version of its Wonderware InBatch software that can be used to manage complex batch processes and is integrated with the company's ArchestrA System Platform software to provide a unified information environment across a complete manufacturing process. By making batch-management data available to users and systems throughout the plant, the software increases operational effectiveness, helps eliminate islands of automation, and enables better levels of business optimization in real time. InBatch 2012 R2 software provides new recipe-version history and comparison functionality based on XML documents. The software is control-system independent and consistent with the ISA-88 standard on batch control. Its capabilities include recipe management, batch execution management, equipment history, material genealogy, stringent security, and Web-based reporting.

Tablet provides real-time data

Novatek EM-Mobile combines an environmental-monitoring application from Novatek with an Xplore iX104C5 DMCR (Dual-Mode Clean Room) rugged tablet from Xplore Technologies to provide the real-time information needed to manage a pharmaceutical manufacturing process. The device facilitates real-time labeling, collection, and tracking of environmental monitoring, utility monitoring, and product bioburden samples. The system provides secure and compliant electronic data management. Reporting, trending, and facility/cleanroom-mapping capabilities allow accurate analysis. The tablet is dustproof, waterproof, and can be sanitized using standard chemical disinfectants without damaging the product. The package consists of a wireless barcode scanner, wireless barcode printer, a stainless-steel cart and mount that can be used to store and transport sampling media, and air-sampling and particle-counting equipment.

Process modeling and manufacturing software features a Web-based user interface

The aspenONE software from Aspen Technology incorporates Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, and any data historian into a Web interface that allows users to work with the software through Web-enabled devices. The interface gives users easy access to models and real-time plant information. The software can be used to compare model predictions and actual plant data and to conduct what-if scenarios for troubleshooting or optimizing. The software features a simple user interface and does not require specialized training. The software's search engine is designed for the process industries and enables users to find specific process information from across an enterprise in seconds.

Scientific innovation lifecycle management software manages large datasets

Accelrys Enterprise Platform 9.0 is an open, scientifically aware platform capable of managing "big data" and externalized research-collaboration networks. The platform offers enhancements in security, administration, and scientific services, which give organizations new tools for streamlining the lab-to-commercialization value chain and driving innovation in new product development. New capabilities allow for flexible administration and Internet deployments of clients outside of an organization's firewall with enhanced security, which enables secure and efficient interaction with external partners. The platform also offers broad scientific collections that are capable of handling structured and unstructured data, biological sequences, chemical structures, images, and text. The platform's reporting capabilities enable end-users to interpret and interact with data to drive more informed decision-making.
