Micheal J. Akers is senior director of pharmaceutical research and development at Baxter BioPharma Solutions in Bloomington, Indiana. He leads the Baxter Center of Lyophilization Excellence. Akers is active in the AAPS and PDA organizations, where in the past he has served on their leadership boards as well as being a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). He also serves on the United States Pharmacopeia Parenteral Products Expert Committee.
Akers is editor-in-chief of Pharmaceutical Development and Technology. He has published more than 100 research articles, teaching articles, review articles and book chapters, including the Parenterals chapter for the 21st edition of Remington’s: The Science and Practice of Pharmacy. He has also authored/edited four books. He teaches several continuing education courses each year on the basics of sterile product science and technology. Akers received his PhD degree in Pharmaceutics from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.
