INTERPHEX 2025: Advanced Flow Sensor Technologies Enable More Accurate Measurement

At INTERPHEX 2025, Michael Franco, global sales director at PSG Biotech, spoke with the PharmTech Group about how recent advancements in pharmaceutical flow sensor technology focus on improving measurement accuracy as drug production becomes more expensive and precise. A key development, he notes, is the enhancement of Coriolis single-use flow meters, which now feature a higher turndown ratio. This enhanced feature allows a single sensor to accurately measure both high and low flow rates. With this innovation, inventory needs can be reduced, and sensor usability across various process conditions is extended, which improves sustainability.

“When we talk about high turndown ratio, it's very good for the industry, because with one sensor, you can measure more than just low flows or high flows. So, in terms of sustainability, there's less need for inventory, and the sensor can be used for longer, because it can be operated in different process conditions. [In] terms of the future, we're adding more digital communication platforms so customers can communicate to the sensors in different ways, making sure that the sensors talk to pumps, and to get a really good performance between the two. [Those] are the things that probably are going to be asked more and more from customers,” Franco says.

Looking forward, this integration of digital communication platforms to enhance sensor interoperability is expected to enable better coordination with pumps and optimize system performance. These advancements are increasingly demanded by customers for improved bioprocessing applications, including tangential flow filtration (TFF) and chromatography skids. The ongoing adoption of these technologies as observed at INTERPHEX, notes Franco, highlights their growing importance in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Industry Outlook 2025: Personalizing Precision Medicine and Adopting AI

“I do think there's a number of areas that are going to be trends for 2025 and somewhat continuation from this year,” says Preeya Beczek, managing director  and co-founder of Beczek.COM Ltd, a specialist in regulatory affairs and compliance. “There's a real focus on personalizing precision medicine, including cell and gene therapies, and, you know, there's expected to be quite a major trend in this area to really focus on the personalized part of that.”

Additionally, there has been a lot of talk from industry about digital manufacturing and using cloud-based systems to improve efficiency, Beczek continues. And, going hand-in-hand with the data-driven approach is the ability for companies to realize the potential return on investment for their R&D efforts, she adds. “It's really looking at that end to end, moving away from functional silos to looking at the R&D end to end, which I find very exciting, actually, because it can really improve health outcomes and really allow companies to focus on the patient,” Beczek says.

A key trend for 2025 will be artificial intelligence (AI), Beczek specifies. “I think we're just going to have lot more people adopting [Generative AI and] that way of working, in their day-to-day work,” she says. “I think that there's going to be some push to get speed, [in] things like manufacturing timelines, [so] they become shorter.”

International Day of Women and Girls in Science: Research, Diversity, and AI

 anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. 

® sat down with Jean Redmond, Chief Operating Officer at Biologit, to talk about the importance of diversity in research, the unique role women play in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), and what can be done to enrich programs to encourage girls to pursue jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

 AI is a fast-growing technology in the pharmaceutical industry. Are there unique and specific skills and/or viewpoints women in STEM jobs bring to this area?

 I believe AI is set to transform the pharmaceutical industry, and this is already taking place in many real-life use cases. Women in STEM need to be intimately involved in the development and deployment of AI to ensure it is built ethically and representatively and in a fit-for-purpose way for problems that affect women.

Whilst AI is hugely powerful and set to transform the industry, it needs to be understood as a tool first and not a solution out of context. Women in STEM need to provide their input to understand the unique problems and ensure appropriate and impactful application. For example, AI and automation is set to transform the landscape of clinical trials, an area in which women have been historically underrepresented. There is huge scope and opportunity here for women to play a key part in.

In addition, it has long been known that data bias exists in research, and it is important that AI models that may impact healthcare are trained on relevant and diverse datasets. In addition to gender diversity, it is also important to consider racial and age diversity and different stages of life, and ensuring the datasets are comprehensive and representative. Women can play a role in advocating for the ethical development of AI.

 How can access to grants for women scientists and to jobs for women working in STEM fields be increased and/or nurtured?

 Increasing access to grants and job opportunities for women in STEM requires a multi-faceted approach that includes financial support, mentorship, and cultural shifts.

Dedicated funding or grants to support paid industry placements for students, or further education opportunities for women, can increase access to roles in STEM. More financial aid and early exposure to STEM careers through internships can encourage long-term participation. In particular for women, a focus on supporting a return to work following maternity leave is a crucial area where women can benefit from support in their careers.

Mentorship plays a key role, and many companies have established internal or external mentorship programs. Professional networks play a key role. I have personally benefitted from the incredible network of women from the IQVIA WIN ERG that has lasted over many years, and engaging in these groups can lead to many opportunities such as exposure to networking events, conferences, collaboration and job opportunities.

Finally, increasing visibility of successful women in STEM provides role models and helps shift industry norms. Providing remote work, flexible hours, and parental leave options helps retain women in STEM careers.

Nicolas Pivet Cytiva discusses automation benefits process development analytics

Process Development Benefits from Automated Analytical Technologies

In an interview with the PharmTech Group, Nicolas Pivet, vice-president and general manager, Technology Solutions at Cytiva, notes that among the challenges in developing a biomanufacturing process is the process analytical technology (PAT) used in that process. Pivet discusses how automation benefits process development, especially when applied to analytics.

“I would say digital documentation is always helping with fast regulatory filing and tech transfer,” Pivet says, adding that, “What we've been experiencing in Cytiva is that many of our customers actually use a platform approach for process development, which is great for speed, but sometimes is not optimized for everything.”

“The introduction of recipe-driven equipment in process development has really enabled 24/7 utilization of labs, so, it's really enhancing the throughput of your lab staff,” Pivet says. The scientist, therefore, with the help of automation, can program lab equipment to rapidly execute experiments and collect samples. “What we've been seeing as well is that SCADA—the supervisory control and data acquisition system—is a layer that allows equipment information to be viewed together. That's why, in Cytiva over the past seven years, we've been developing our Figurate automation offering, which is a wide range of automation solutions and libraries, from historian to control systems with Unicorn [a control software] to SCADA with Wonderware [an automation platform] and to DCS [distributed control system] with Delta V and PlantPAx [types of DCS].”

In the area of PAT, Pivet feels that the bio/pharma industry needs to move faster. In the sensors space, for example, P80 sensors have been seeing an emergence of improved sensing technology. “Measuring CQAs [critical quality attributes], for instance, inline or online is really the holy grail of the biopharma industry right now,” Pivet says. “…The industry needs to get there in being able to measure CQAs inline and helping with real-time release, or right-time release, of the drug product.”

Founder and CEO of Atomic AI, Raphael Townshend, explores AI’s usefulness as a tool to characterize molecular structure and advance molecule engineering.

Applying AI to Molecular Structure (BIO 2024)

Raphael Townshend, founder and CEO of Atomic AI, a US-based emerging biotechnology company specializing in applying the fusion of artificial intelligence (AI) and structural biology for RNA-based drug discovery, discusses the use of AI as a tool for characterizing molecular structure and, in doing so, advance molecule engineering.

“At a high level, why we care about molecular structure is because the structures of molecules really determine what they do: structure determines function, so to speak. What we found in the last few years is that AI is a very powerful tool for understanding the structures of these molecules,” Townshend says. He notes that, traditionally, methods for understanding structure have names, such as X-ray crystallography, or nuclear magnetic resonance, or cryo-electron microscopy. “The issue is that they can oftentimes be very expensive to use and slow to use; it's a very bespoke process. Every single structure that is solved can be a very manual and involved undertaking. And what we've seen is that we can take all this work that's been performed in the field of structural biology, of understanding structures, and feed that into these AI algorithms that are now able to predict those structures in minutes or seconds instead. We've seen these orders of magnitude speed up our ability to model these structures and understand what they look like in their native environments,” he explains, emphasizing that AI enables a “rational drug design”.

“We're already starting to see that and bear fruit today. The use of [AI] … speed[s] up the process of … the whole drug discovery space, of doing the whole drug discovery process, so to speak,” he observes. He further explains that, as an additional layer on top of the traditional drug discovery process, AI can enable rapid screening, or a rapid search, through many possible drug candidates. “[T]he idea is that we're using these kinds of approaches to get to better, faster drugs, and getting things faster to the clinic and running those through a better rate.”

“As I like to say, AI is a cool thing of the day. It's a powerful tool, but it's a tool nonetheless,” Townshend adds. “It's not going to be a panacea; it's not going to solve every single problem under the sun. In particular, the areas where AI works well are those where there's [a significant amount of] data associated with it … and, so, in areas where that data [are] more limited … that can be an obstacle to the development of the correct AI applications in this space,” he notes when discussing some of the hurdles in implementing AI in the drug discovery space. Townshend says that, to address these limitations, the industry would need to collect additional datasets to push progress forward.

“Some areas to really think about, for example, are 

 studies where the amount of animal data that we might have might be relatively limited as compared to high throughput screening stages where you have [much] data, comparatively speaking. [T]hese are resolvable obstacles, but, today, the amount of data out there does not allow for the use of AI in its most advanced form across the entire drug discovery landscape. And that's not even speaking about the development cycle, [such as] clinical trials. There's even more complexity and even more limitations interpret the data. So, while there was this dream of one day using AI across the entire process, right now, there are some key areas where it's providing significant leverage, and we're working towards shoring up those additional gaps,” Townshend says.

Lee Cronin, founder and CEO of Chemify, discusses the combination of digital chemistry, robotics, and AI in the drug discovery space at BIO 2024.

The Intersection of Chemistry, Robotics, and AI in Drug Discovery (BIO 2024)

As BIO 2024 moves into full swing, Lee Cronin, founder and CEO of Chemify, a UK-based company specializing in building up digital chemistry for chemical research, discovery, and manufacturing, discusses how the combination of digital chemistry, robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI) are advancing the drug discovery space.

According to Cronin, the concept behind digital chemistry is to connect chemical reactions to synthesize molecules in standardized hardware, or in a standardized way. This involves “using a programming language so that we can very faithfully reproduce chemistry, on demand and also to a given quality,” Cronin states. The process of computation in digital chemistry is akin to running code on a computer, he emphasizes. “The concept of digital chemistry … is pioneering this ability to turn code into molecules reliably at scale, on demand, and also for the creation of quite complex molecules, and even APIs,” he adds.

The combination of programming language, robotic architecture, and the use of data and AI is creating a new approach to not just making molecules but discovering and doing process optimization, practically in one tool chain, Cronin explains. “What this means is that we should be able to go from the discovery process to dreaming up new molecules to then the optimization and scaling,” he says.

It is not necessarily easy to dream up a molecule 

 and then translate that into producing that molecule on demand because some aspects may not be worked out, or the yields might be low, or there may be other blocks, Cronin points out. “What Chemify has done is we've built a series of approaches that allow us to digitize chemical reactions and have them ready on demand—a bit like building blocks,” he states. This approach allows the user to pull a code and go from a chemical reaction A to B or from a chemical reaction A to D, depending on preference. “[This approach] allows you to go from your target that you dream of, to then work out what particular reactions you must do ahead of time, and, more importantly, allows you to restrict your search of chemical space when you're [early in the research process], when you're dreaming up new molecules to reactions you know how to do, [and] so this increases the speed that you can discover new molecules and make new molecules, and go through the cycle of design–make–test–analyze,” Cronin explains.

Of particular significance is that once a new molecule has been made, once the code has been established, that code can be reused and optimized to scale further down the line, Cronin points out. “You've got this programming language and these reactions and the robots that run it; [therefore], you're able to update your process continuously with the weight of the insights that you get,” he adds. With these chemical reaction insights, the data and methods can then be processed through AI, allowing for optimized yields, Cronin states.

Jay Rajagopalan from PSG Biotech, shared insights at on how current industry trends are shaping the development and advancement of sensor technologies.

A Look at the Impact of Industry Trends on Sensor Technologies (INTERPHEX 2024)

® sat down with Jay Rajagopalan, senior director—Engineering & Product Management for Malema at PSG Biotech, to discuss the impact that current bio/pharm industry trends are having on sensor technologies and the innovations that have emerged in response to these trends.

One trend, the process analytical technology (PAT) initiatives enacted by FDA, has greatly improved the census quality and requirements of real-time flow measurement that progresses much of the advancement in sensor developments, Rajagopalan said. These advancements are mostly associated with the process analyzer-type of devices, where, earlier, gram-size samples were taken and later tested in labs. Today, however, with the help of PAT, measurements are taken in real time in the field while the process is ongoing.

“Products, such as flow meters that I'm associated with, are [taking measurements] in real time, so they are part of the process systems. [Because of this] we are already in compliance and support [FDA’s] initiative,” Rajagopalan stated.

Real-time measurement is another important trend, he adds, noting that having more than one sensor in the sensor module itself is a practice that is gaining in popularity. “That means [there is] multi-parameter sensing,” Rajagopalan explained, “so, it is not just [about] measuring flow … [but] if you measure flow along with pressure and temperature, for example, that adds to the value of [the technology], and it [is occurring] in real time. That is really the technology which is trending now,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, single-use technology is one example of an innovation that developed in response to industry trends, Rajagopalan emphasized. Other innovations include Coriolis mass flow meters, which are designed for high-purity applications. These meters offer accurate flow measurements regardless of changes in density, viscosity, and temperature (1). Rajagopalan pointed out that these meters provide additional parameter measurements such as density and temperature in real time, and that such real-time data are helping the advancement of flow measurement.

In looking at how sensor technologies play a role in the bio/pharma industry’s move toward digitalization, Rajagopalan said that “sensors with older technologies were more analog in nature; they only provided one information which the sensor is sensing to the control system. Whereas, digitalization helps to send more data, more process variables data, through the same cable or method of communication.” Thus, customers are empowered with more quality data and more in-depth data, such as the health of the product, health of the sensor, etc. “[This] helps the customer [conduct] more predictive maintenance or predictive actions. I think digitalization is the future, so everybody is moving towards that, and so does our company,” Rajagopalan added.
