ABC Farmaceutici to Mark 100th Anniversary with CPHI Frankfurt Display

ABC Farmaceutici, one of a network of companies under the purview of global pharmaceutical company ICE Pharma, will be recognizing 100 years since its founding as part of its exhibit at CPHI Frankfurt, being held Oct. 28–30, 2025 (1).

What is ABC Farmaceutici’s history?

Pharmacist Giovanni Giraudi started ABC Farmaceutici in Turin, Italy in 1925; a century later, according to an ICE Pharma press release, the company has expanded its reach worldwide, and now offers a portfolio of medicines, therapies, and contract services to partners in more than 50 countries (1).

“Reaching 100 years is not only a celebration of our past, but also a promise to the future,” said Severino Previtali, ABC Farmaceutici Business Unit director, in the press release (1). “This milestone reminds us of the generations of people who have contributed to our success, and it inspires us to continue driving innovation, building strong collaborations, and making a meaningful impact on global health.”

In what ways has the company grown?

ABC Farmaceutici’s integration into ICE Pharma, the press release said, has strengthened its position in the ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) market—UDCA being, among other uses, a treatment option for primary biliary cholangitis, a rare, chronic, autoimmune disease of the bile ducts (1,2).

Other areas in which ABC Farmaceutici has developed expertise over the decades, thanks in part to a Research Centre established in 1960, include APIs and dermo-cosmetics (1).

As part of the celebration at CPHI Frankfurt, ABC Farmaceutici will highlight its past achievements but also highlight its research concentrations that point the company toward the future. A special “100 Years” logo will also be unveiled at the conference.

What about ICE Pharma’s presence at CPHI?

At CPHI Milan in 2024, ICE Pharma showcased a 100% recyclable booth, constructed at its designated exhibition location, the materials having been held over from CPHI Barcelona in 2023 (3).

ICE Pharma Chief Commercial Officer Roger Viney, PhD, had previously spoken to Pharmaceutical Technology® in a series of interviews, published in December 2024 and January 2025, addressing a variety of topics including ways bile acids can potentially improve solubility and bioavailability.

“The past 20 years have seen a very significant amount of research done into bile acids and their recognition that they're more than nature's surfactants, that they're, in fact, signaling molecules that have metabolic function,” Viney said at the time (4). “And so, this kind of research has opened up a whole new field where bile acids can potentially treat oncology, liver diseases, even neurodegenerative diseases.”

ABC Farmaceutici will officially recognize its 100th anniversary with a celebratory event at its booth at CPHI Frankfurt, 9.1A94, on Oct. 28 (1). An exact time has yet to be specified.
