SPE Extrusion Division to Host Minitec-PLUS PET/PLA Extrusion

The Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Extrusion Division will host the SPE Minitec-PLUS polyethylene terephthalate (PET)/polylactic acid (PLA) Extrusion, a two-day event at the Polymers Center in Charlotte, NC, on May 1–2, 2019.

On Feb. 12, 2019, the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Extrusion Division announced that it will host the SPE Minitec-PLUS polyethylene terephthalate (PET)/polylactic acid (PLA) Extrusiona two-day event at the Polymers Center in Charlotte, NC, on May 1–2, 2019.

The program will feature tutorial presentations on day one, and advanced presentations relating to PET and PLA formulations on day two. Presentations will be given by industry experts from the SPE Extrusion Division Board, industry, and academia. The program also includes extrusion demonstrations and a facility tour.

Day one technical presentations on general extrusion theory include:

  • Single-screw extrusion theory and design

  • Twin-screw extrusion theory and design

  • Die and downstream technology for film, sheet, and tube/profile

  • Auxiliary equipment trends and developments

  • Extrusion trends, tips, and developments

  • Demonstration assembly/disassembly of a co-rotating twin-screw extruder screw set

  • Tour of Polymer Center 

  • Reception/mixer.

Day two extrusion of PET and PLA formulations will include:

  • Single- and twin-screw modifications for PET and PLA

  • Auxiliary extrusion equipment targeted to PET and PLA

  • Upstream material handling

  • Melt rheology comparisons for PET and PLA formulations

  • Specialty post-industrial and post-consumer reclaim systems

  • Specialty “hot button” topics.
