Hiden Analytical’s Catlab PCS is a microreactor combined with a mass spectrometer system to characterize and evaluate catalysts while completing general thermal studies, including temperature programmed desorption and reaction testing. The combination product features a fast-response, low thermal mass 1000 °C furnace with multistream gas flow control of up to eight gas streams, and a single integrated program to control operating parameters, data acquisition, and presentation. The four precision mass flow controllers are expandable for eight gas streams with a flow rate between 50 and 500 mL/minute. Absorption isotherms, metal dispersion, and surface acidity can be determined, while the mass spectrometer provides continuous, simultaneous multicomponent product measurement.

A quadrupole mass spectrometer with a quartz inert sampling line coupled with the reactor results in minimized dead volume and sample memory. The Catalyst Cartridge System ensures consistency and repeatability in sample loading, with an in-bed thermocouple for measurement of sample temperature and reaction exotherms.
