The company is touting its HPC74 series, which it said features heat-seal coated construction and has the highest puncture and tear strength of all of its reinforced medical papers to date.
TekniPlex Healthcare, a full-service contract development manufacturing organization (CDMO) for medical materials science, particularly in the minimally invasive and interventional therapy devices space, announced in a press release on Sept. 26, 2024 that it will unveil, at Pack Expo 2024 in Chicago from Nov. 3–6, 2024, its strongest-ever reinforced paper for medical device packaging applications (1,2).
The HPC74 Series, according to TekniPlex, features heat-seal coated construction, the highest puncture and tear strength of all of the company’s reinforced papers in its history, and superior porosity levels, all of which help the paper withstand robust demands for protection, distribution, and sterilization (1). The paper is breathable, available in several proprietary coating formulations, provides a clean peel, and has wide processing windows for rollstock and lidding applications, TekniPlex said.
Advanced air knife technologies are used to apply the paper’s coating, which TekniPlex said seals effectively to polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene terephthalate glycol, and a proprietary copolyester, TekniMD PX. The company said the HPC74 series has significantly outperformed traditional paper products in terms of tear and seal strength and provides high-quality microbial barrier protection (1).
“As medical devices and their supply chains become increasingly sophisticated and complex, they naturally require protective solutions rooted in sound materials science,” said Chris Qualters, CEO of TekniPlex Healthcare, in the press release. “The HPC74 Series represents our most durable coated paper solution to date and is just one of the many groundbreaking solutions we’ll be highlighting at Pack Expo this year.”
At INTERPHEX 2024 in New York City, in April 2024, Pharmaceutical Technology® interviewed Melissa Green, TekniPlex head of global marketing, healthcare division, on several topics including the company’s December 2023 acquisition of Seisa Medical, which allowed TekniPlex to become a full-fledged CDMO with the expertise to support the biologics market, namely both upstream and downstream processing solutions, final fill operations, and single-use bioprocessing applications (2).
“As the biologics sector continues its steady growth, so does the need for high-quality materials and components suppliers who can also be innovative solutions partners," Qualters said in another press release at the time (3).
As Qualters indicated, TekniPlex Healthcare will be showcasing other packaging-related offerings at Pack Expo, including Tyvek solutions that are utilized for form-fill-seal and die-cut applications; the company recently reported that its Tyvek converting capabilities have been expanded into European Union countries (1). Flexapharm SBC series polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC)-coated PVC structures, serving as barriers against oxygen and moisture, and Aclar laminates, which TekniPlex said help to preserve drug shelf life and efficacy, are also expected to be on display at Booth W-14065.
