Three Formats, One Platform: Halo's New Sterile Fill-Finish Line

Before GMP qualification begins, Halo Pharma opened its new sterile fill-finish manufacturing platform to a limited preview, with PharmTech getting a look inside the production suite and insights from some of the innovators bringing it to operation. Built to support sterile injectable manufacturing from clinical development through commercial production, the new platform combines Groninger filling technology with integrated SKAN isolators and ready-to-use formats from Schott, Stevenato, and Gerresheimer, covering prefilled syringes (0.5–10 mL), vials (2–30 mL), and cartridges (1–5 mL). Modern contamination control strategies support current aseptic manufacturing expectations, giving Halo a flexible platform for both clinical-scale and commercial sterile injectable programs.

Lee Karras, group CEO, Halo Pharma, frames the new sterile fill-finish investment as a response to capacity constraints across the domestic injectable supply chain, noting that customers absorb tariff impacts more directly than does Halo. He says onshoring supports both supply security and FDA quality expectations, adding, "We think there needs to be more domestic manufacturing, especially on the injectable side of the business."

The platform marks Halo's first foray into filling syringes, vials, and cartridges. Karras says the timing reflects a domestic injectable supply chain already operating at capacity, and described the asset as more modern than much of the installed base customers have relied on historically.

Karras also discusses Halo's agreement with Apotex, announced in April 2026,¹ which he characterized as securing an anchor customer with existing products in need of a US source, a deal expected to trigger an FDA inspection early in the platform's life. He tied the investment to Halo's broader portfolio strategy, saying, "We're the only domestic source that produces oral solids, liquids, injectables, and blow-fill-seal products in one network of plants." He adds that Halo's narcotics manufacturing capability is a distinguishing attribute.

Karras says Halo plans to focus on high-value generics and narcotics that require domestic production, alongside specialized branded products, including a push into personalized medicine and gene therapy, where he says the flexibility of Halo's injectable capabilities could support smaller-batch, specialized manufacturing.
